Steps to Becoming A Broker:


  1. Complete the education required by the Commission. ACRE School can provide all the neccessary courses. The exact education required varies based on each applicant's prior real estate licensing background. To determine your education requirements click here or visit the Colorado Real Estate Commission website.

    New applicants, those who have never held a real estate license, must take the 168 hour Broker Associate Pre-Licensing Course.


  2. Pass the official PSI broker examination: You can reach PSI to schedule you exam at www.psiexams.com. You must pass your required examinations before you apply for a license.


  3. Apply for a license. To recieve a license you must:

    1. Be at least 18 years of age.


    2. Pass the required official exam(s). To determine which exam(s) you need to pass, contact the Colorado Real Estate Commission.


    3. Obtain a certificate of license history from each jurisdiction in which you hold or have held a real estate license. The certificate must be less than 90 days old when you submit your Colorado application.


    4. Provide your fingerprints to the Colorado Bureau of Investigations and the FBI for a background check. You can get your fingerprints done and submitted for the background check at any PSI Exams testing center for $59.50. They will take credit cards only.

      You may also submit a Fingerprint Card (Form #FD-258). We strongly recommend that you start the background check process as soon as possible. Wait times for processing can be 2-3 months. The real estate commission will not issue your license until the background check is complete.

    5. Provide proof of acceptable E&O insurance. This must be in place on your license for the license to be placed on active status.

    6. Apply for your license within one year of passing the examination.


    7. Find an employing broker. Your employing broker must sign your application for a real estate license.


    8. Submit your license application to the Colorado Real Estate Commission.
